Vietnamese president to pay official visit to Japan next week

Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang is slated to pay a state visit to Japan, aimed at tightening the two countries’ relationship, next week.

President Quang and his spouse will conduct his business trip from May 29 to June 2, at the invitation of the Japanese state, according to Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are scheduled to meet with and hold a state banquet in honor of the Vietnamese head of state and his spouse.

Quang will also hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his visit.

Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1973, and elevated their ties to Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia in 2014.

The bilateral relationship was strengthened by significant and historic visits made by both countries’ leaders last year, especially the first-ever trip to Vietnam of the Japanese emperor and empress, running from February 28 to March 5.

PM Abe arrived in the Southeast Asian nation for an official visit in January 2017 and again in November to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit week.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc also led a delegation of high-ranking Vietnamese officials for an official trip to Japan in June.

In 2017, Japan became the largest foreign investor in Vietnam, with total registered capital of US$9.11 billion, equivalent to 25.4 percent of the total inflow of foreign direct investment in the Southeast Asian country.

Japan was also the largest ODA provider for Vietnam, and the fourth-biggest trade partner of the country, with bilateral trade recorded at $33.4 billion.
